Landfill remediation is a task that requires great precision. Any mistake can lead to damage to the sealing layers that protect the soil and groundwater from contamination. In a project in Torviscosa (Udine, Italy), the key challenge was to create a stable substructure on which heavy machinery could safely move while keeping the delicate geosynthetics intact.
How did we overcome this challenge? Check out our case study!
Who was the customer?
Our client was the Italian company Plydex, which supplied materials for a project led by BSA Ambiente (IREN Group). The goal of the project was to rehabilitate a 60,000 m² municipal landfill and ensure its full integrity and long-term stability.

What problem did the customer face?
The 60,000-square-meter landfill already had key geosynthetic layers:
- PEAD geomembrane with a thickness of 2 mm,
- geotextile,
- Drainage geocomposite reinforced with geo-grid.
They were responsible for making the entire facility watertight and protecting the environment from potential contamination. The problem arose when the next stages of work had to begin. Excavators and trucks had to enter the site to spread aggregate and form a 60-centimeter reclamation layer.
Every pass of the machine posed a real risk of damage to the geomembrane, and even a minor puncture could lead to leaks, high repair costs and serious delays. Our client therefore needed a solution that would protect the delicate sealing layers on the one hand, and on the other create a stable working platform capable of carrying the load of heavy equipment.
Solution designed by Geo Globe Poland
To meet the requirements of the project in Torviscosa, we proposed the use of cellular geonets Smartmaxx® GES462150-60TPC with a height of 15 cm. This solution made it possible to simultaneously protect delicate geosynthetic layers and create a stable working platform for heavy equipment.
Why Smartmaxx®?
- With its high height and dense cell structure, the system effectively stabilizes the aggregate, reducing the risk of aggregate movement.
- The loads generated by construction machinery were evenly distributed, eliminating the threat of damage to the PEAD geomembrane and drainage geocomposite.
- After filling with aggregate, a load-bearing and stable working surface was created, allowing further reclamation work to be carried out safely
The end result - what did the customer gain?
The effectiveness of our proposed solution has been confirmed by tests. Cellular geonet Smartmaxx® maintained the stability of the fill, and the loads generated by heavy equipment were evenly distributed so that the delicate sealing layers remained intact.
As a result, the client was able to continue the reclamation work safely - excavators and trucks moved freely over the surface, spreading successive layers of aggregate and forming a 60-centimeter substructure. The entire process proceeded on schedule, with no risk of damage or costly delays.
Ultimately, the investor gained:
- Full protection of the sealing layers (geomembrane, geocomposite and geotextile).
- Stable working platform resistant to the pressure of heavy machinery.
- Ability to efficiently execute works on the entire 60,000 sq. m. area.
- A long-term solution that guarantees the integrity and safety of the landfill.
This shows that in projects of environmental importance, not only materials but also properly selected geosynthetic systems are crucial. Smartmaxx® gives contractors the confidence that even the most demanding investments can be carried out safely and efficiently.
